French Flair on the Banks of the Vaal River

Just an hour away from Johannesburg, on the banks of the Vaal River, lies a little hidden gem in the form of a quaint French-provencal inspired winery. Wine sales and on-site alcohol consumption might be banned for the short term, but the beautiful river views, rolling green lawns and artisanal deli menu make the winery a must-visit regardless for celebrations, romantic getaways and family adventures.

With freshly baked pizzas, baguettes and loaves fresh out of the oven, cold meats, cheeses, fresh fruit as well as number of delectable desert options, the deli enables you to create an enviable picnic spread. The winery village also has a fully stocked bar (when permitted amid lockdown), a coffee roastery and a gelato bar so everyone’s guilty pleasures can be indulged.

The picnic area is child friendly – with sand pits, fountains and water canals weaving their way through the picnic sites and boat rides on offer for a sunset cruise. If you’re hosting a birthday or special celebration, the in-house décor company is able to assist with “pique-nique nouveau” setups to add that French finesse worthy of an Instagram spread.

The venue occasionally hosts events such as live bands and grape picking in the vineyards so it’s best to keep an eye on their Facebook page for upcoming activities. Just across the road from the Pont de Val winery is the Pont de Val hotel and function venue, restaurant and spa, so if the picnic becomes “more festive” than anticipated, guests can make a weekend of it.
